DAVIDsTEA Birthday Cake Review

So it’s a little bit passed my birthday already, but I couldn’t help myself by brewing another cup of DAVIDsTEA Birthday Cake! I had a heavy dinner but was still craving something sweet yet caffeine free for the evening.

Besides, who says you’re only allowed to have birthday cake flavored tea ON your birthday?! I drink this tea all year round!

It had then occurred to me that I’ve had this tea tin filled with delicious tea for months and have yet to write an official review about Birthday Cake (‘official’ being used loosely, because I can ramble on about tea to anyone who has an ear).

Before you know it I had the kettle on, the camera out, and my lineup of tea equipment ready to go for the review.

What is Birthday Cake Tea?

DAVIDsTEA Birthday Cake is a delicious dessert tea. It is:

  • Loose leaf tea
  • A rooibos blend
  • Caffeine free
  • Low in calories

Origin

From the USA

Interesting Notes

DAVIDsTEA Birthday Cake only has 10 calories per cup! That’s 240mL of delicious cake filled tea for only 10 calories!

The Aroma

There really were no words to describe how delicious the smell was.

When I took off the tin to get a good sniff, I literally got hit in the face with Birthday Cake heaven.

I needed a minute to collect myself. All I could do was just sit here and keep sniffing.

The smell really does remind me of actual birthday cake. And cupcakes. And pretty much anything that has vanilla icing on it.

That’s what DAVIDsTEA Birthday Cake really smells like to me – vanilla icing. And it smells delicious.

Leaf Details

When looking at Birthday Cake you can see individual pieces of:

  • Red rooibos
  • Green rooibos
  • Actual sprinkles!
  • Honeybush
  • What looks like small balls of vanilla and perhaps chocolate pieces. I believe they call this “ice cream bits” in the ingredients section below

Preparation

Below are the recommended guidelines when brewing a cup of DAVIDsTEA Birthday Cake:

  • Use about 1 ¼ teaspoon of tea leaves per 240 mL of water
  • Boil water, preferably filtered water, to 96°C or 205°F
  • Steep for 4 to 7 minutes

Reminder:

Remember that over steeping tea for too long will cause tea to taste bitter.

If you would like a stronger cup of tea, it is recommended to use more tea leaves than the suggested 1 ¼ teaspoon amount. You may need to play around with how much tea leaves to use until you reach your desired taste.

Tea Tasting

If you’re asking yourself “I wonder if it really tastes like cake” The answer is yes, it actually does taste like cake.

It has a very sweet taste to it. I personally find that I do not need to add any type of sweetener to enhance the taste.

I also find it a bit creamy or buttery at times and can see a slight residue in my cup. I think this is from the sprinkles and ice cream bits as they melt from the hot water.

Birthday Cake is a rooibos base tea and I could clearly taste the rooibos while drinking. I’m a big fan of rooibos so it’s only natural I would like Birthday Cake as well.

In the above photo I chose to use my scoop-n-slide infuser to brew Birthday Cake.

Once brewed, the tea had a light maple looking liquor that was reddish brown in color.

One of these days when it starts to get a bit cooler, I will have to brew another cup but as a Birthday Cake latte!

Birthday Cake Ingredients

  • Red and green rooibos
  • Honeybush
  • Sprinkles
  • Ice cream bits
  • Natural and artificial flavoring
  • Contains milk, eggs and soy

Final Thoughts

In my review of DAVIDsTEA Birthday Cake, I found it to be a delicious dessert type tea.

I like Birthday Cake for the simple fact that it tastes good, it’s sweet enough on its own, and it actually tastes like cake. All while being a caffeine free and light tea.

Birthday Cake is also a nice treat and is great for when you’re craving something sweet in the evening but you’re still full from dinner. I find it to be a comforting tea and it’s also nice to have for a special occasion.

I also like that it’s caffeine free. You don’t have to worry about not being able to fall asleep at night time.

In my opinion Birthday Cake is one of DAVIDsTEA best selling teas. It’s stocked all year round and I’ve seen it on their shelves for the past several years now.

At only 10 calories per cup, you can now have your cake and eat it too!
